ince it first burst onto the gaming scene, the Battle Royale genre has been steadily milked by developers and wannabes looking to replicate the same success that its pioneers enjoyed. You could say that at its current state, there are just too many Battle Royales and not all of them necessarily hit the mark. Of course, there are exceptions such as Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone. But what else is there to play besides “The Big Three”?
Enter Hyper Scape. A new challenger looking to give Fortnite, the top dog of the Battle Royale scene, a run for its money. Since its streaming debut in July 2020, throngs of people have been playing it in closed beta. This is similar to what Riot Games did with Valorant where they made use of big-time streamers to distribute codes. There’s no shame in trying to emulate one’s success and it looks like Ubisoft, the ones behind the reigns of Hyper Scape, is looking to tap into that space. But has Hyper Scape got what it takes to be better than Fortnite?
Much like most in the Battle Royale genre, Hyper Scape is free-to-play, with constant updates on the way to smoothen it out. But as it stands, could Hyper Scape really be the one to de-throne Fortnite off the top spot? And what does it offer that other games don’t?
If you’re itching to find out more, we’ve got you covered!
What is Hyper Scape?
Before we discuss what could make Hyper Scape better than Fortnite, let’s look at what it actually is.
Hyper Scape is Ubisoft’s take on what a Battle Royale game should be. The game offers a futuristic spin on the genre—thanks in large part to its flashy sci-fi settings. Hyper Scape is more akin to Apex Legends in terms of feel and likeness.
This fast-paced BR game is focused heavily on mobility because of its huge map, and there are tons to explore within the urban area. Hyper Scape can be played on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Currently, there’s a Hyper Scape battle pass that you can also purchase to redeem rewards such as skins, Hyper Scape currency, and more. There’s no news about whether it’ll be released on the Nintendo Switch as well as next-generation consoles yet.
Hyper Scape vs. Fortnite: What Does Hyper Scape Offer That Fortnite Doesn’t?
We’ve already seen what Fortnite has to offer, but what about Hyper Scape? Ubisoft has managed to pull out some creative innovations despite the oversaturated market of Battle Royale games. For one, you can loot your abilities. Abilities in Hyper Scape are called “Hacks” and they can define the way you play in every match. These Hacks can be looted across Neo Arcadia’s streets and have different varieties, making each game unpredictable and fresh since you don’t know what kind of Hacks you’ll stumble upon. Thanks to Hacks being completely random, people are obligated to play and play again to see what they’ll end up with next!
The most unique aspect of Hyper Scape is its Echo system. Normally, in a Battle Royale game, if you die while with a squad, that’s it! Sure, you can cheer your teammates on and spectate each of their PoV’s, but that’s about all you can do.
There are other games though such as Apex Legends that give you another chance to get back into the match through the use of “respawn cards”. Call of Duty: Warzone also implemented something similar to this where you can buy back teammates or earn your right to get a second chance through a 1v1 gulag fight.
Hyper Scape takes it to the next level by not only being able to spectate your team, but you can do so on your own terms. When you die in Hyper Scape while together with a team, you become an Echo. It’s sort of like you become this ghost that has free control over their movements. As an Echo, you’ll be invisible to enemies and you can’t interact with items or weapons at all. Sure, you’re not fighting, but you’re technically still in the game! You can use this opportunity to scout enemy locations and ping your teammates should there be items and opponents nearby. Luckily, you won’t be stuck as an Echo for the whole game. If your team manages to kill an enemy, a one-time respawn drop will appear and they can use that to bring you back.
Is Hyper Scape Better Than Fortnite?
Hyper Scape is looking to take Fortnite’s place as the best Battle Royale game, but it’s still too early to say at this point. Not to mention that there are hurdles that Hyper Scape has to go through first. You could say Fortnite has the upper hand because of its seniority, but we believe that Hyper Scape can become a serious contender to take the number one spot with a few tweaks and updates. As is stands though, Hyper Scape is still a newborn that still needs a lot of love!
